In 1731, Frenchman Abbe Prevost’s novel “Manon Lescaut” was published and promptly banned for its supposed scandalous content. Pirated editions were popular and the story line has endured over time. On March 10 and 11, the newest version of “Manon Lescaut” will be performed in Tokyo’s Shibuya district as Unit Kimiho celebrates its 10th anniversary in dance.
“Manon Lescaut” recounts the doomed love between the noble le Chevalier des Grieux and courtesan, Manon, and is the basis or inspiration for numerous dramatic productions. Yet, as choreographer Kimiho Hulbert points out: “The original novel includes des Grieux’s best friend who seeks him out after this great tragedy and helps Des Grieux keep on living. I wanted to pick up on these details that are usually ignored — the connections that help us keep on living.”
…
“Manon” will be performed on March 10 (7 p.m.) and March 11 (2 p.m., 6 p.m.) in Sakura Hall at the Shibuya Cultural Center, Owada, in Tokyo. Tickets cost ¥3, 500 to ¥4,500. For details, visit www.kimiho.org.

In mid-January, Sega locked down a North American release date for Yakuza: Dead Souls, and now Europe’s date with Tokyo-based zombies has finally been scheduled.
Yakuza: Dead Souls will arrive in Europe on March 16, according to Eurogamer. The PlayStation 3-exclusive is coming to North America on March 13, which is plenty of time for seasoned zombie killers to prepare for the impending attack. Already released in Japan under the name Yakuza: Of the End, the sixth game in the cult-hit series throws players into the “infamous red light district of Tokyo” during a zombie outbreak.
Don’t fret, Yakuza fans, because zombies aren’t the only enemy you’ll be facing. Yakuza: Dead Souls will also throw hordes of “merciless” mutants in your path, along with all of those seedy characters from the Japanese underworld. As for possible zombie-infected Hostesses? We’re keen on letting the brain-chomping ladies sit this one out.

Tokyo’s original – and best – boutique hotel lies smack in the middle of the city’s design district, in an affluent residential neighbourhood. It’s a bit off the map, but with that comes a taste of Tokyo’s quieter, more livable side. Opened in 2003 in what was then an ageing business hotel (the facade remains), the Claska has stunning Japanese modern rooms with crisp lines and a cool palette; some have private terraces, tatami floors or glass-cased bathrooms. There’s a rooftop terrace and a hip lounge in the lobby that serves an excellent traditional Japanese breakfast; both are popular with locals, too.• 1-3-18 Chuo-cho, Meguro-ku, +81 3 3719 8121, claska.com. Doubles from ¥19,950 (around £175)
…
Designed in 1962 by architect Yoshiro Taniguchi, this celebrated Japanese modern hotel sprawls in a way that wouldn’t be possible today. Newer five-star competitors lodged on top of office towers boast that they have so many contemporary art pieces they are practically a museum, but the Okura actually has a museum. …

The problem with this, however, is that it is ultimately an unsatisfying narrative as it merely places the artist behind a curtain of blind adoration that ignores his failings as an artist — some of his pictures are hopelessly cluttered and compositionally weak — as well as the elements that tie him to his era.
Last year’s exhibition at the Fuchu Art Museum connected Kuniyoshi’s inventiveness to censorship laws that were established as part of the Tenpo Reforms of 1842. The implication was that, unable to depict courtesan lovelies and kabuki worthies, he was forced to diversify his output into new genres, and being mercurially talented, he could do this without missing a beat. However, this sounds rather too mechanical, failing to account for Kuniyoshi’s artistic personality and the complex way it interacted with the spirit of the times.

Hiroma, my translator and tour guide in Tokyo, asked, “Is there anything special you’d like to see or do?”
…
The Dome is where the Tokyo Giants baseball team plays. Baseball season is over in Japan but the gift shop was open. Some things are the same everywhere. I bought a Hiroshima Carp jersey, only because Carp is funnier than Giants.
I went to the Tokyo Auto Show, where they had prototypes of tiny nonpolluting autos than make the Smart Car look like a Hummer.
…
My favorite place in Tokyo was the intersection at Hachiko Square. It’s the busiest pedestrian street crossing in the world. They call it “the Scramble.” More than 2.5 million people cross the street outside the train station at Hachiko Square each day. During one red light, there can be 10,000 people scrambling across the street. The first Starbucks in Japan is on the northwest corner.

The first is Paul Church, who documents his daily life in his adopted home city of Tokyo. The 32-year-old moved to Japan eight years ago to join a Senshusei course, the notoriously tough 11-month aikido martial arts programme, originally created to train Tokyo riot police. Church is clearly a man who throws himself into things with admirable dedication; when he graduated from the aikido course he received an award for never missing a day through sickness or injury – participants train almost every day for eight hours, and many drop out after only a few days. He still lives in Tokyo, working as a scientific copy editor and transcriber by day, but in his spare time he channels his energies into his photo journal.
…
Most of his images are black and white, an interesting choice in a city that is usually portrayed lit up in vibrant, multicoloured neon. He cites various famous photographers as inspiration, from the street photography of Bruce Gilden, known for his work in …

Fresh DNA tests conducted in connection with the 1997 slaying of a 39-year-old Tokyo Electric Power Co. employee offer further evidence exonerating the Nepalese man serving life in prison for her death, his counsel said.
…
The new tests, conducted by the Tokyo High Public Prosecutor’s Office, offer further evidence that the victim had been in contact with another man at the time of the crime, they said.
Similar evidence was presented at Mainali’s original trial, but the possibility the victim could have been with another man at the time of her slaying was rejected, even though she was allegedly moonlighting as a prostitute.
…
The Tokyo District Court acquitted Mainali of robbery-murder charges in April 2004, citing a lack of evidence and the possibility that a third party could have been at the murder site. It also reportedly ruled that the sperm found in the condom was too old to have been left on the day of the slaying.
